Bucharest dedicated server: south-east Europe, storage and backups

For users in Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Serbia, a server in Frankfurt adds 15 to 20 ms to every round trip. Bucharest removes it at the same price, keeps the data in the EU, and is where our 96 TB storage servers live. The latency table, the workloads and the sizing.

Paired bars of round-trip latency floors to Sofia, Chișinău, Belgrade and Kyiv, from Bucharest against from Frankfurt; Bucharest is 6 to 12 ms shorter.

A Bucharest dedicated server is the closest of our 13 locations to Romania, Moldova, southern Ukraine and Istanbul, and it sits in ZetServers' home country. For an audience in Romania or the wider region it beats Frankfurt by 15 to 20 ms on every round trip, and it costs the same. It is also the home of our high-density storage servers, which makes it the natural place to put a large archive, a seedbox or an offsite backup. This guide covers who Bucharest serves best, the numbers behind that, and the workloads that suit it.

Who a Bucharest server is close to

Bucharest sits at the eastern edge of the EU, a few hundred kilometres from five other capitals. The same arithmetic used throughout this series applies: straight-line distance divided by 100 gives the round-trip floor in milliseconds, and real paths land 30 to 50% above that plus a little router delay.

From Bucharest to Great-circle Theoretical floor Working estimate
Sofia 295 km 3.0 ms 5–6 ms
Chișinău 358 km 3.6 ms 6–7 ms
Istanbul 447 km 4.5 ms 7–9 ms
Belgrade 449 km 4.5 ms 7–9 ms
Budapest 643 km 6.4 ms 9–12 ms
Athens 744 km 7.4 ms 11–13 ms
Kyiv 747 km 7.5 ms 11–13 ms
Vienna 856 km 8.6 ms 12–15 ms
Frankfurt 1,454 km 14.5 ms 20–24 ms
Tel Aviv 1,566 km 15.7 ms 21–25 ms

Read the table the other way round and the case for Bucharest is clear. A Romanian, Bulgarian, Moldovan or Serbian user reaching a Frankfurt server pays the 20-odd ms between Bucharest and Frankfurt on every round trip, before their own last mile is counted. For a web shop that is a slower first page; for a game server or a voice service it is the difference between a server that feels local and one that does not.

The Romanian market

Romania has some of the fastest fixed broadband in Europe, built largely on fibre to the home, and the largest home broadband provider, RCS&RDS (Digi), runs its network out of Bucharest. Romanian users on good fibre notice a nearby server: when the last mile is fast, the distance to the server becomes the larger share of the delay they feel.

Romania has been an EU member since 2007, so a Bucharest server keeps personal data inside the EU under the same GDPR rules as Frankfurt or Paris. And because ZetServers is a Romanian company — INTERKVM HOST SRL, hosting since 2010 — a Bucharest server puts the hardware, the operator and the contract in the same EU country. For some buyers that simplifies the paperwork more than any other location could.

Workloads that fit Bucharest

Services for Romania and the Balkans. E-commerce, media, SaaS and public-sector work aimed at Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova or Serbia should be served from the region. A 2 Gbps dedicated server is a sensible starting point for a busy regional site with heavy media; the port can be raised later on the same machine.

Large storage. Our storage servers are built in Bucharest: 96 TB raw across eight 12 TB drives, a dual Xeon, 128 GB of RAM and a 2 Gbps guaranteed port, from €549 a month. That is the right shape for a media archive, a dataset mirror or a VOD library's long tail, where capacity matters more than per-drive speed.

Seedboxes and file distribution. Long-lived torrent seeding and file distribution want a lot of disk on an uncapped pipe, which is exactly what the storage range is. Storage and seedbox servers covers the configurations and the RAID layout that suits sustained sequential reads.

Offsite backups for a western primary. If your production server is in Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris, Bucharest is about 1,450 km or more away — a genuinely separate region with separate power, separate networks and separate weather. That distance is exactly what an offsite backup server needs, and the backup stays inside the EU.

A second point of presence for eastern Europe. Pair Bucharest with a western primary and route eastern users to it. Combined with GeoDNS, two well-placed servers cover most of Europe with a short round trip for nearly everyone.

Sizing a Bucharest server

For a regional website or application, the CPU and storage usually decide the configuration and the port is generous at any tier. For delivery and storage roles it is the other way round:

backup window (hours) = data to copy (TB) × 8,000 ÷ port speed (Gbps) ÷ 3,600

A full 20 TB copy over a 2 Gbps port takes about 22 hours at line rate; incremental backups after that are a fraction of the size. If your recovery plan requires restoring a large dataset quickly, size the port for the restore, not the nightly increment — restores are the moment speed matters.

What a Bucharest dedicated server costs

Bucharest carries no location premium: the city is a free option at checkout, so a build costs what it costs in Frankfurt or Paris. The configurations that fit the regional and storage work above:

Server Configuration Per month
1 Gbps unmetered Dual Xeon E5-2630 v4, 20 cores, 128 GB €209
2 Gbps unmetered Dual Xeon E5-2630 v4, 20 cores, 128 GB €259
96 TB storage server Dual Xeon E5-2660 v3, 128 GB, 8 × 12 TB, 2 Gbps guaranteed €549

Standard dedicated builds in stock are usually online within an hour; storage servers are assembled to order and typically take about a week. The unmetered dedicated server buyer's guide covers the higher tiers and what each costs per delivered terabyte.

When Bucharest is the wrong choice

Audiences in western Europe or the UK. London is more than 2,000 km from Bucharest. A server for British, French or Iberian users belongs further west.

A single origin for all of Europe. If you can only run one delivery server for a continent-wide audience, Frankfurt minimises the worst case; Bucharest puts the western half of the audience further away.

Latency-critical workloads aimed at Turkey or the Middle East where a server inside the target market is available. Bucharest is close to Istanbul, but a local server will always be closer.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Bucharest dedicated server good for users in Moldova and Ukraine?

Yes. Chișinău is about 358 km away, with a round-trip floor under 4 ms, and Odesa about 426 km. Kyiv, about 750 km away, is far closer to Bucharest than to Frankfurt or Amsterdam, though Warsaw edges it for northern Ukraine.

Does a Bucharest server keep data in the EU?

Yes. Romania is an EU member state, so data on a Bucharest server is stored inside the EU under GDPR. Backups, monitoring and support access still need to be checked separately.

What storage options are available in Bucharest?

Our storage servers are built there: 96 TB raw on eight 12 TB drives with a dual Xeon, 128 GB of RAM and a 2 Gbps guaranteed port, from €549 a month. Standard dedicated servers with SSD or NVMe are available in Bucharest too.

Is Bucharest cheaper than Frankfurt?

Neither cheaper nor dearer: a Bucharest build costs exactly what the same build costs in Frankfurt, from €209 a month. What changes is who the server is close to, and for users in south-east Europe that is worth 15 to 20 ms on every round trip.
